Learning about Lungs - Preschool Activity

Fitness Fun Activity 3

You will need a balloon for the optional activity.

  • Teach the rhyme:

"Inside my chest there are two lungs

that help me breathe clean air.

I'll exercise and keep them strong

and treat my lungs with care."
  • Explain that the lungs are inside the chest even though we can not see them. Have the children take a deep breath, hold it and then breathe out. Point out that, when their chests rise, air is going into their lungs.

Ask the children:

Where are the lungs? (Inside my chest.)

What do the lungs do? (They get air from outside and give it to my heart and all over my body.)

What are some of the places that need air in your body? (Everywhere in the body.)

What would happen if the air stopped going to that part of your body? (That part of the body couldn't move.)

What are some good ways to keep your lungs healthy and strong? (Breathe clean, fresh air, stay away from smoke and cigarettes, exercise.)

  • Have the children dance or jump in place for a few minutes. Point out that their breathing has changed. Ask the children why they are breathing harder.

  • You may wish to perform this optional demonstration. Attempt to blow up a balloon. Tell the children that it's something difficult to blow up a balloon without stretching it. When you stretch a balloon, it's easy to get air inside and blow it up. (Strict the balloon and blow it up.) Point out that the air in it came from inside your lungs. Explain that your lungs are like balloons. If you exercise your lungs, just like when you stretch a balloon, it's easier to get air inside.
