What is Shade? - Preschool Activity
My Sun-sational Skin Activity 2
Objective: To learn what is shade.
You will need: chalk, umbrellas, a variety of hats with and without brims
Take the children out doors in the morning or late afternoon on a sunny day. Ask the children to find their own shadow. Play shadow games encouraging the children to wave arms, move legs, etc... to see their own shadow clearly.
Ask the children what makes their shadow show up. Some of the children will understand that the sun is involved but others will not. You might ask the children to feel which side of their head is warmer or ask them to notice where the sun is.
Give each child an umbrella or hat to change the shape of the shadow. Trace each child's shadow. Older children may be able to trace their friends.
Encourage the children to look at each other's shadows and discuss the various shapes made by the hats and umbrellas.
Ask the children to find shadows of ther things outside such as trees, buildings, swings, and slides.
Have the children trace the shadows of some of these objects. Ask the children if they have ever heard the word shade. Gather the children into the shade of a large tree or building to see if it is cooler than the sunny playground.
As an addition to this lesson, you could have a picnic with GO Foods and encourage the children to seek a spot in the shade to rest and eat.
