My Sun-sational Skin Activity 1

Objective: To learn what skin is and what is sun burn.

You will need: mirrors and cariety of textured materials including feathres, cotton, wool, burlap silk, etc., glue and card board.

Have the children take turns looking in the mirrors. Ask the children to touch their own face and the backs of their hands.

Ask the children what they think the skin's job is. Ask the children to look at and touch their own skin, on the face, on the hands, and on the neck.

Ask the children what things feel good to their skin.

Give the children the opportunity to touch the textured materials and discuss which things feel good and which things don't.

Ask the children if anyone has ever scraped, cut, or burned their skin by accident. Duscuss how this feels. Ask the children if anyone has ever gotten burned by the sun. Ask the children that have experienced sun burn to tell when and how they got it.

Discuss the term "Sun Burn."

Stress to the children that the skin has the important job of covering the whole body and helping us feel things and we must protect our skin.

Let the children make a feely-collage using the various textured materials glued to stiff cardboard. This could be done on card board cut into the shape of people or hands for added effect.

Teach the following rhyme:

This is my skin that holds be all in

and tell sme if I'm warm or if I'm cold.

My skin helps me touch, and feel smooth and rough.

It'll wear it until I grow old.
