Junk Food and Dental Hygeine - Preschool Activity
Germ Busters Activity 3
Read the rhyming story "Junkfood Jed Gets a Pain in His Head"
Junkfood Jed wasn't feeling very well, his whole left cheek was starting to swell. The pain in his tooth was making him cry, so he went to the dentist to find out why. Dr. Hope U. Brushem greeted Jed with a smile. She said, "Jed, I haven't seen you in quite a while. I'd like to know what tis is all about. There's a hole in your tooth, that's what's making you shout!" "A hole?" asked Jed. "How did that get there?" "I will tell you," said the dentist, "if you sit in my chair. Whenerever you don't brush away the foot that you eat, it builds up in your mouth and starts to rot your teeth." While she was talking, Dr. Brushem took her tools and cleaned Jed's teeth 'till they sparkled like jewels. She filled up the hole with a special dentist filling and gave Jed a present that was postively thrilling. A new purple toothbrush and some toothpaste and a book with pictures showing how brushing your teeth should look And before she went away, Dr. Brushem stopped to say "Jed, you need to brush your teeth every single day!" To help you and other kids remember what to do, I've made up a special rhyme for you: Brush them up and brush them down brush them, brush them, all around Side to side, and when you're done Go back in and brush your tongue!"Ask the children:
Why did Junkfood Jed's tooth hurt him? (It had a cavity in it; it had a hole in it.)
Why did Junkfood Jed get a cavity / hole in his tooth? (He didn't brush his teeth; he ate too many sticky treats and didn't brush afterwards.)
How often should you brush your teeth? Once a year? Once a month? Or every single day? (Every day.)
Why is it important to brush every day?
What gets left on our teeth if we don't brush them? (Food gets stuck there.
What are some foods that may stick to your teeth? (candy, marshmallows.)
How do we need to brush our teeth to get to all the parts of the teeth where the food might be? (Up and down, all around, side to side.)
Teach the children the rhyme from the story:
Brush them up and brush them down brush them, brush them all around Side to side, and when you're done go back in and brush your tongue! This is a sample activity from the Healthy Start, Health Education Program for Preschoolers
